TATA IPL 2025-2027: New Player Retention Announced

In a major development for the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Governing Council has announced fresh player regulations for the upcoming TATA IPL seasons 2025-2027. These decisions, aimed at enhancing team strategy and player engagement, were made after an extensive meeting in Bengaluru, following discussions with franchise owners earlier this year at BCCI Headquarters.

Key Highlights of the IPL Player Retention:

1. Retentions and Right to Match (RTM):

Franchises can retain up to six players from their current squads. This can be done through a combination of standard retentions and the Right to Match (RTM) option. Out of these six, teams can retain a maximum of five capped players, which can include both Indian and overseas players, while two spots are available for uncapped talents. This flexibility allows teams to maintain core players while nurturing young talent.

2. Auction Purse and Salary Cap:

The auction purse for each franchise has been increased to INR 120 crore for the 2025 season, with further increments planned over the next few years. The total salary cap, which now includes the auction purse, incremental performance pay, and match fees, will rise to INR 146 crore in 2025, INR 151 crore in 2026, and INR 157 crore in 2027. This step ensures greater financial rewards for top-performing players while maintaining a competitive balance across franchises.

3. Introduction of Match Fees:

For the first time in IPL history, a match fee has been introduced. Each player who takes the field, including the Impact Player, will earn a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game. This payment will be on top of their contractual earnings, providing further motivation for players to give their best on the field.

4. Regulations for Overseas Players:

Overseas players must register for the Big Auction to be eligible for selection. Failure to register will render them ineligible for the following year’s auction. This ensures clarity and commitment from international players towards their participation in the IPL.

5. Player Auction Ban:

A strong deterrent has been introduced for players who pull out of the tournament after being picked in the auction. Any player who makes himself unavailable post-auction will face a two-season ban from both the IPL and future player auctions. This rule is designed to ensure professionalism and accountability.

6. Changes to Player Status:

A unique provision has been introduced for Indian players. Any capped Indian player who has not played for the national team in any format (Test, ODI, or T20I) in the last five years, or does not hold a central BCCI contract, will be deemed uncapped. This is a significant move that could offer more opportunities to veteran players who have not been in the national team recently.

7. Continuation of the Impact Player Rule:

The Impact Player regulation, a strategic game-changer introduced in the recent seasons, will continue for the 2025-2027 cycle. This rule allows teams to make dynamic in-game decisions, providing flexibility in how they use their players.

Conclusion

These updated retention policies reflect the IPL’s commitment to innovation and player welfare, ensuring a competitive yet player-friendly environment.
